Mariners getting heavy-duty practice in for "Seattle Idol 2010"
Posted by Geoff Baker
We've told you before that the Mariners are staging a Seattle Idol 2010 competition for their rookie players and no major leaguers this spring. In the photo above, you can see Idol judge Mike Sweeney getting a sneak preview at the dance moves of the Bad Bodies Swinging Big Bats team of Tommy Everidge and Brad Nelson. The third member of the trio, Mike Carp, is just off to the far left in the foreground.
Come to think of it, maybe they were just warming up for baseball drills.
Anyhow, the competition begins on Sunday. By then, all contestants have to turn in an iPod version of the song they are going to perform, either to Sweeney or Ken Griffey Jr.
The judges' panel might be a little harsher than the real thing. No Paula Abdul types in this bunch.
Here are the judges:
Ken Griffey Jr. -- a.k.a. "Randy"
Mike Sweeney -- a.k.a "Ryan Seacrest"
Ryan Rowland-Smith -- a.k.a. "Simon"
Eric Byrnes -- a.k.a "Ellen"
Ichiro -- a.k.a. -- "Guest judge"
For a complete list of contestants, turn to the next page. Also, I'll give you the lineups for today's charity game as well. It's against the Padres, doesn't count in Cactus League play (actually, I've been told that it does count this year...go figure) and starts at 12:05 p.m. Pacific time.

Speaking of contests, remember to get out and vote (only once) in Round 2 of ESPN 710's media bracket on MYNorthwest.com. It's me against Steve Kelley. Quite the popularity contest for a lot of you. At least the Times will see one of us dartboards make it to the third round of the Media Bracket challenge. Who will it be? Who really cares? My Mom, for one. Baby sea lions everywhere.
Deadline is 3 p.m. Pacific time today. I'll be on with Brock and Round 1 loser Salk today about an hour before the deadline so they can use me to pump up ratings.
By the way, speaking of pumping things up, in this case, self-esteem, if you missed the audio of Ken Griffey Jr. introducing himself to Tim Lincecum today in the opposing clubhouse, here it is.
Just click right here to listen.
See Lincecum's reaction immediately afterwards in the video below.
