Ryan Langerhans gets one-year major league contract from Mariners
Posted by Geoff Baker
Well, that didn't take very long, did it? Barely six days after being non-tendered by the Mariners, Ryan Langerhans agreed to a one-year, major league contract with the team. So, that puts the 40-man roster at 39.
This is an interesting move and I wonder what it means going forward? It could mean the Mariners plan to go with the same platoon in left field that they did in the latter part of last season. Or, that they aren't sure whether their attempts to land a new left fielder will be successful and they want some insurance just in case. Could mean they want more depth and will let everyone fight it out for that back-end roster spot this spring, though you try not to put guys on the roster when you don't really have to if that's the case.
It could also mean they are planning to trade Michael Saunders and bring in a new left fielder. And maybe that guy will be a left handed bat rather than a right handed one. Finally, it could mean Saunders will be in Class AAA to start the year rather than being traded.
Langerhans gives them some outfield backup. But don't forget, Bill Hall is also a guy who can play the outfield corners.
Yeah, I know, these explanations don't help you much. I'm stabbing in the dark here.
