Forget Gregg Zaun for the Mariners, signs with Brewers
Posted by Geoff Baker
The Mariners will not be landing Gregg Zaun as a veteran catcher option this coming season. Zaun just agreed to a $1.9 million deal with a guaranteed $250,000 buyout on a 2011 club option with the Milwaukee Brewers, a package that came together within the last 24 hours. Not sure if he's signed on the dotted line yet, but I'm told the deal is done.
Seattle had been one of about five teams interested in Zaun, but as we told you yesterday, had placed their catcher search on the back-burner while they tended to other areas.
The idea to go after Zaun was to place him in a tandem with rookie Adam Moore in the event Rob Johnson wasn't healthy enough to start the season. With Johnson making progress in his recovery from three surgeries and having a fourth operation ruled out, the M's were not as anxious to get this deal done as other clubs may have been.
Seattle can still go after another veteran catcher as things get closer to the start of the regular season. But Zaun was after playing time and -- with Johnson and Moore possibly taking up the bulk of it next season -- coming here was not as attractive as it might have seemed a few weeks ago with Johnson's status a lot more uncertain.
