Report: Mariners turned down deal for Edwin Jackson
Posted by Geoff Baker
We've discussed the possibility of some type of Mariners deal with the Detroit Tigers for the past couple of weeks. Well, yesterday, we got word via the Twitter account of Sports Illustrated writer Jon Heyman that the M's shot down a proposed deal for Tigers pitcher Edwin Jackson.
Heyman wrote that the Tigers asked for Mariners pitcher Brandon Morrow and reliever Shawn Kelley.
My first reaction is that those two arms would have been too high a price to pay for Jackson alone. After all, Jackson will be a free agent in two years and his pricetag is considerably higher than Morrow and Kelley put together.
As part of a larger deal, say, that includes center fielder Curtis Granderson, I don't think Morrow and Kelley leaving would be out of the question -- along with some other players. After all, the M's are stockpiling a nice collection of late-inning arms both at the major league and minor league level. Don't forget, the M's have Josh Fields and Phillippe Aumont both preparing to knock at the major league door.
Then, there is David Aardsma, Mark Lowe and Kelley at the MLB level. They can't all be closers and some will make nice trade bait.
But not for Jackson alone. Get that deal expanded and it looks a lot more interesting.
