Willis, Stankiewicz named as Mariners minor league co-ordinators
Posted by Geoff Baker
The Mariners today named their new minor league pitching and fielding co-ordinators, snagging longtime Cleveland Indians pitching coach Carl Willis , 48, (photo) for the mound role. Andy Stankiewciz, 45, a former major league infielder who spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Arizona State University, takes over as the fielding co-ordinator.
Today's moves were made necessary by the recent departures of pitching co-ordinator Dave Wallace, now handling the same duties for the Atlanta Braves, and Tim Tolman, who was reunited with new Indians manager Manny Acta last week as a bench coach in Cleveland. Tolman had been Acta's third base coach in Washington, but was fired after the 2008 season, while Acta was let go by the Nationals during this past campaign before Cleveland hired him.
In Willis, a former major league pitcher, the Mariners acquire a pitching instructor who worked closely with Cy Young Award winners C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee while those two were still pitching in Cleveland.
"We are very pleased to add Andy and Carl to our staff,'' Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said in a release. "Their diverse experience in these key player development roles will be very beneficial to our organization. I am looking forward to watching them role up their sleeves and go to work.''
