Ken Griffey Jr. undergoes knee surgery

Posted by Geoff Baker

The Mariners just put out a release stating that Ken Griffey Jr. underwent surgery today in Cincinnati to remove a bone spur from his left knee. They state that it's normally a four-to-six-week recovery process.

Dr. Timothy Kremchek performed the surgery.

The Mariners have yet to announce officially whether or not Griffey will return next season. He's a pending free-agent and there has been speculation he could retire, especially after his emotional, tear-filled season-ending game three weeks ago. Griffey would be 40 in 2010 and was slowed repeatedly by knee problems throughout the 2009 season.

As far as surgeries go, this one was pretty minor. More "clean-up'' than anything else and Griffey was released as an out-patient soon after it was done.

So, what remains to be seen is how the Mariners view this. Griffey as well. Will they feel that he could have performed better and more consistently had the bone spur not been there? I'll assume, for now, that the spur is what caused many of Griffey's problems in August, when he had to miss a bunch of games.

We'll know more shortly.
