Maybe they should add a mercy rule to the AFL because an eight-spot given up by Peoria in the seventh inning has them trailing 17-2. Yikes! The good news for M's fans is that a hitless Joe Dunigan is the only Seattle prospect contributing to this debacle. Still only two hits for the Javelinas. I've given up on doing play-by-play for prospects from other teams. Most of the folks in the stands have stopped counting as well.

Just got back talking to former manager John McLaren, who is in the stands scouting for the Tampa Bay Rays. McLaren just got back from a month-long stay in Italy, where he was managing MLB's academy in that country. He got a good look at Seattle's Class A team in High Desert this season and came away awfully impressed.

"They have about five or six blue chip prospects down there,'' he said. "Usually, a team will be lucky to have just one or two.''

One of those is Joe Dunigan, today's starting DH for the Peoria squad.

McLaren said he was happy for what the Mariners accomplished this season. He'd like to get back in the dugout at some point, but is taking his time getting 2008 out of his system.

By the way, for those of you worried, Dustin Ackley will not be a first baseman down here, despite his being listed there on the AFL roster. Ackley told me he's worked out in center and left field and that's where he'll be playing starting tomorrow.

2:21 p.m.: Joe Dunigan just grounded out for the third time today, leaving this a 9-2 game, his Peoria team trailing, as we head to the seventh inning. I'm working on a Phillippe Aumont feature for tomorrow's paper, which should answer some of your questions about his health and the rumors we've been hearing the past few months about why the Mariners made him a reliever.

1:51 p.m.: Peoria is getting hammered, 8-1, in the fifth inning. Joe Dunigan is the only M's prospect in the game and he grounded out for the second time today in the fourth. The groundouts were to second and first base, leaving him 0-for-2. Only two hits for the Javelinas so far.

1:16 p.m.: This game just got out of hand in a hurry as Peoria pitcher Andrew Olivercame on in the third and gave up a leadoff single, two walks and a grand slam by Mets prospect Ike Davis to put Surprise up 5-1 on Peoria.

12:57 p.m.: We're tied 1-1 midway through the second inning after a run-scoring single with two out in the second by Surprise third baseman Brandon Laird. Bryan Anderson had led the inning off with a walk and came around to score.

Peoria took a 1-0 lead after Lorenzo Cain led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field. Scott Sizemore moved him over to third on a groundout, then Dayan Vicideo drove him home with a flyout to right. Mariners prospect Joe Dunigan grounded out to second to end the inning.

Peoria pitcher Scot Drucker retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning.
