Adam Moore, Matt Tuiasosopo, Garrett Olson, to be called up, but Mariners stuck in rain
Posted by Geoff Baker
The headline above tells you the remainder of the September call-ups still to come from Class AAA. Seattle has to remove a player from the 40-man roster. My guess is minor league pitcher Stephen Kahn will be the odd man out, but that's just me talking. (UPDATE 9:50 a.m. -- Kahn just got placed on unconditional release waivers, so he is the guy going).
Today's start time for Game 1 of the doubleheader has been pushed back to noon Pacific time and I seriously doubt we're going to see a pitch by then. It's been raining all night and all morning, as hard as at any time during last night's ninth inning mud bowl. They will update us at 10 a.m. Pacific time but the rumor is we're looking at a mid-afternoon Pacific start time at the earliest. If that's the case, it's unlikely they'll get two games in today. But let's wait and see.
As the headline says, the Mariners will be calling up catcher Adam Moore, third baseman Matt Tuiasosopo and pitcher Garrett Olson from Class AAA after the Tacoma Rainiers were eliminated by Sacramento in the playoffs last night. Moore is the big news for Mariners fans who view him as the team's catcher of the future,
The team obviously sees him playing a future role as well because the Mariners already have two healthy catchers in Rob Johnson and Kenji Johjima here. This isn't just a merit promotion. You'll notice that Chris Shelton, another guy wortthy of promotion and who we speculated a couple of weeks ago might be coming up. But he isn't and the big reason is Mike Sweeney's revivial at the plate. The Mariners no longer have a need for a righthanded hitting DH type. So, a deserving Shelton is not coming up with the others. Moore is, which tells you the team will want to see him in action.
Carlos Silva will join the team in Seattle on Tuesday. He was on a minor league rehabilitation stint and needs only to be activated off the disabled list. No recall from AAA needed in his case.
