Look who showed up to Mariners batting practice
Posted by Geoff Baker
None other than ex-Seattle resident Kenneth Gorelick, otherwise known to music fans as Grammy Award winning saxophonist Kenny G. Had a chance to chat with the G-Man himself for a bit, not-too-slyly interrupting his rehearsal of the Star Spangled Banner, which he's here to play tonight. As I type this, he's down on the field having a prolonged talk with Ken Griffey Jr.
But moments ago, we were speaking. He was very interested in all of the Japanese media swarming the field. Asked me where Ichiro was and I pointed him out. He seemed impressed that I had a Fuji TV crew following me around. But was more intrigued by Ichiro. We were in the middle of talking when a certain Mariners relief pitcher walked up.
"Hey remember me?'' Miguel Batista asked, extending his hand.
I replied that yes, indeed, I did remember Batista, since we'd chatted just the other day. Batista ignored the quip. Kenny G., for a split second, hesitated and then said "Yes, of course I do.''
You may remember, of course, that Batista, an aspiring electronic saxophonist, was a huge Kenny G. fan and met his idol in spring training of 2008 in the photo below. Yeah, I also think Batitsa should go back to the domed head.
And so off they went on their own little chit-chat. I stepped aside to give them some privacy and simply pulled out my camera and began snapping away. Later, once Batista went to actually do some working out, we resumed our conversation. Kenny G. told me he gets back to Seattle three or four times a year -- his father and other family members still live up there. We talked about his days as a member of a Seattle Seahawks pep band.

In other news, Jack Wilson is back and available for pinch-hit duty tonight after his bout with the flu yesterday. No official word on Sean White's MRI since Dr. Edward Khalfayan has been in surgery all day with other patients.
Brandon Morrow will meet the club in Texas. He's on his way there now, rather than going with the team, which won't arrive until about 6 a.m. tomorrow.
