Mariners' Monday lineup: No Ichiro, Jack Wilson back

Posted by Larry Stone

Note: I originally said that Ichiro "strained" his left calf, but apparently that's too strong a word. He has tightness in his calf, and is day to day. I'll have more on that in a bit. And to clarify, Lefton was talking about Ichiro's career with Seattle.

Ichiro, who has tightness in his left calf yesterday, isn't starting today. Brad Lefton just noted to me that it might be the first time in Ichiro's Seattle career that he has missed a game with that type of injury -- a muscle strain or pull. Brad could recall him missing games once because he ran into the wall, once after getting hit in the head with a pitch, and, of course, his DL stint at the start of this year for a bleeding ulcer.

Franklin Gutierrez will hit leadoff, and Bill Hall gets the start in right. Jack Wilson, meanwhile, returns at shortstop after being out since Aug. 12 with a hamstring injury.

hasn't the Branyan batting 2nd fiasco run it's course by now? Why not give young Michael Saunders a shot batting 2nd? Or Wilson? either...  Posted on August 24, 2009 at 4:30 PM by alias. Jump to comment
Well hopefully Ichiro's injury isn't very serious and he's back out there tomorrow or the next day. He needs 16 more hits to get to...  Posted on August 24, 2009 at 3:34 PM by BennyG. Jump to comment
Either case, I think Ichiro can use a day or 2 off. He's been playing every day, and I thought he looked tired in that last Cleveland game....  Posted on August 24, 2009 at 3:52 PM by perwilly. Jump to comment
