SI's Jon Heyman says Yankees still after Seattle Mariners pitcher Jarrod Washburn
Posted by Geoff Baker
This could be an interesting final 24 hours before the trade deadline as the New York Yankees are continuing to pursue Jarrod Washburn, according to this report by John Heyman, who used to cover the Yanks for years.
Heyman says the Mariners asked for either Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes in initial talks between the team.
Now, he says the Mariners are mulling over a list of New York prospects, but they are not A-listers like OF Austin Jackson (not that the outfield is a top Seattle priority at present), or catchers Jesus Montero and Austin Romine. What's with all the guys named Austin, anyway?
While Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said on Wednesday that both sides are "open to it" in regard to the consideration for an extension for Washburn in coming months, a trade remains a very realistic possibility for the free-agent-to-be.
So, let's see what that brings.
I had a discussion a little while ago with some contracts in Minnesota and they don't seem to think the Twins will make a hard push for Washburn. The Twins did scout Washburn this week, as well as reliever Sean White. But the Twins are also said to be wondering whether they can meet the pricetag some other club might offer up.
Minnesota does have young infielder Alexi Casilla, who is a decent glove but as you can see, not much of a bat. There's also Delmon Young, whose game has gone south and is not even a viable DH candidate.
So, this could get interesting if the Mariners hold out for Chamberlain and Hughes and the Yankees decide to fold.
