Clement: Where there's smoke...

Posted by Larry Stone

Crazy night tonight. I was trying to write the game story on deadline, track down the Jeff Clement rumor and keep up with the blog. And all with a game that ended in the bottom of the ninth, the toughest kind to write. I'm not whining. It's nights like this that make the job fun. Stressful, but fun.

Sorry about the blog shutdown that seemed to happen between 9 and 9:30 -- right when the Clement story broke. I'm told it had to do with maintenance on the site.

At any rate, I've been led to believe that there's definitely something brewing with Clement, who as we all know by now was removed for a pinch-hitter in the third inning of Tacoma's game at Reno. By all accounts, there was no injury or illness involved. It doesn't appear he's being called up to the Mariners, because manager Don Wakamatsu was in the dark after the game. I now have little doubt that he's going to be traded, and it could be announced today.

I'm also told that nothing is official yet, but that could be just a formality until all the i's are dotted and t's crossed. I don't think Clement would have been pulled unless something was imminent. I harken back to Adam Jones being pulled out of his winter league game in Venezuela a couple of winters ago (sorry to bring it up). It actually happened twice. The first time, nothing happened, though he was indeed pulled because the Mariners thought a deal was imminent. The second time, Jones was traded to the Orioles (though that deal took awhile to become official, if you'll recall, because of issues over his physical).

I'll continue to pursue this, but right now, that's all I've got. I'm expecting a Clement trade, and it wouldn't shock me if Brandon Morrow was part of it.
