Seattle Mariners trade for Oakland A's third baseman Jack Hannahan
Posted by Geoff Baker
Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik just gave his team the short-term help it had been seeking at third base. The Mariners just shipped off Class AA pitcher Justin Souza to the Oakland A's for third baseman Jack Hannahan.

Last season, Hannahan ranked second in fielding among AL third basemen.
Hannahan doesn't have the big power bat usually associated with a third baseman. His OPS last year was .647, but it was .793 in 2007, which would be an upgrade if he can replicate it.
It's on the fielding side where he should benefit the team.
His Ultimate Zone Rating with Oakland this year was +6.8 over 51 games. Last season, over 126 games, it was +8.4. That's very good.
Souza was 6-6 with a 3.35 ERA at AA West Tennessee.
This move enables the Mariners to improve defensively, perhaps offensively as well. Yes, it cost them a AA arm. But as we saw yesterday, the team just picked up a pretty good arm in Danny Cortes at AA. A move like that replaces some minor league depth lost with this move.
And the major league team gives nothing up.
