(UPDATED): Corcoran activated, Johnson placed on bereavement list

Posted by Larry Stone

UPDATE AT 3:36 P.M.: Manager Don Wakamatsu just gave us what he called "devastating news" about Rob Johnson's bereavement leave. Johnson's mother-in-law -- the mother of Johnson's wife, Kristan -- died last night in a car accident in Texas. Kristan Johnson had been in Seattle with their infant son, Lane. Johnson left the clubhouse this afternoon when he found out and is en route to Houston, as is his wife.

"We just wanted to get him there as soon as possible,'' Wakamatsu said.

The Mariners have activated relief pitcher Roy Corcoran, who has been on the disabled list since April 30 with a strained neck. Corcoran is at Coors Field and will be in uniform tonight.

Corcoran, for now, will take the roster spot of catcher Rob Johnson, who was placed on the bereavement list. No details yet available, except that it's a family emergency.

According to MLB rules, a player, with permission from the commissioner's office, can stay on the bereavement list for three to seven days.

Johnson played in Friday's game and had two hits.

I always hate hearing about bereavement b/c we always assume the worst. Hoping for the best regarding Johnson.  Posted on June 13, 2009 at 2:42 PM by T$. Jump to comment
