Murderers' Row in Tacoma can't help Mariners yet

We talked this morning about how the Tacoma Rainiers, with newly-added Brad Nelson, could probably take out the current Mariners in a home run derby. Let's look at that a bit further. Here are the guys in Tacoma, including first baseman Mike Carp (pictured above from spring training) posting an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .800 or greater after at least 100 ABs.
Prentice Redman 1.012
Mike Carp .981
Bryan LaHair .885
Jeff Clement .867
Chris Shelton .841
Mike Morse .815
Michael Saunders has been limited to only 61 at-bats because of injury, but is at 1.069 since returning. Nelson was at .860 in Class AAA last year.
And now, the Mariners:
Russell Branyan 1.014
Ichiro .800
And, as they say in Quebec, France and Erik Bedard's hometown: "C'est tout.''
That's it.
Now, obviously, it's a lot tougher to hit in the majors than at AAA. You could probably throw out at least half of the totals on that AAA list right off the bat before trying to convert it to major league hitting totals. And that's just for starters. But there is clearly some power potential down on the farm.
Trouble is, none of the players fits the description of what the Mariners need at the moment. They already have their first baseman and outfield set. Third base will stay the same until a trade. Ken Griffey Jr. isn't going anyplace. The only guy who could truly help, Clement, isn't catching much because of a sore knee. But there certainly is some depth building up. And once the trading season begins, the M's could be very active indeed.
