Mariners closer David Aardsma could be back "sooner, rather than later"
Mariners closer David Aardsma, recovering from offseason hip surgery, has been throwing in the bullpen.
Seattle Times staff reporter
OAKLAND, Calif. — Mariners manager Eric Wedge said before the game that closer David Aardsma could be back "sooner, rather than later" as he continues his rehabilitation work from offseason hip surgery.
Aardsma has started throwing bullpen sessions the past week or so and accompanied the team on this season-opening trip.
Gutierrez working
in Arizona
Franklin Gutierrez is taking antibiotics to try to overcome the stomach issues that have plagued him throughout spring training. The Mariners still don't know what is causing the problem, but will attempt to get the center fielder back on the field regardless.
Gutierrez is taking part in limited baseball workouts back in Arizona, but the bigger issue is getting his strength and conditioning back to normal.
Filling in for Guti
Wedge said he hasn't decided how the center-field rotation between Ryan Langerhans and Michael Saunders will work.
Langerhans started Friday's game in and was 0 for 5 with four strikeouts. Wedge said he'd like to collect more in-game data from Langerhans and Saunders — both left-handed hitters — before making any hard decisions on playing time.
Notes
• Mariners players took the field Friday night wearing patches on their right sleeves in honor of late broadcaster Dave Niehaus, who died in November.
• Ichiro had two hits and needs one more to match Edgar Martinez's franchise record of 2,247.
