CC Sabathia gets 19th win for Yankees | Baseball Notebook

CC Sabathia pitched one-hit ball for eight innings to earn his 19th win, most in the majors, as the New York Yankees beat the A's 5-0 for a four-game sweep.

NEW YORK — From the very first batter, the Oakland Athletics simply looked overmatched against CC Sabathia.

Leadoff man Coco Crisp took an awkward cut at a fastball for strike three. Next, Rajai Davis got fooled by an off-speed pitch and almost fell over. Then, Kevin Kouzmanoff flailed at a slider.

A lot of weak swings and soft outs followed on Thursday. Sabathia pitched one-hit ball for eight innings to earn his 19th win, most in the majors, as the New York Yankees beat the A's 5-0 for a four-game sweep.

Sabathia (19-5) breezed on a steamy afternoon, nicked only by Mark Ellis' clean single leading off the second. Jonathan Albaladejo completed the combined one-hitter in the ninth.

"I've always enjoyed pitching in hot weather," the 6-foot-7, 309-pound left-hander said. "Keep the sweat going, keep my arm loose."

The A's barely touched him. After Ellis' opposite-field stroke through the right side and a fly out later in the inning, the Athletics didn't hit another ball to the outfield until the eighth.

In his past 21 starts at Yankee Stadium, Sabathia is 16-0 with a 2.05 earned-run average. That undefeated streak is the longest by a Yankee at any stadium, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Ron Guidry won 19 in a row in 1985 and '86.

Notes

• Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia will have a CT scan on his broken left foot Friday and will have season-ending surgery if there is no apparent improvement.

• Marlins C John Baker will undergo Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow and might not play again until 2012.

• Slugger Manny Ramirez returns to Boston Friday night when the White Sox open a series against the Red Sox. It's Ramirez's second trip to Fenway Park since he left the Red Sox on bad terms during the 2008 season.
