HOUSTON — Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Chris Jakubauskas was hit near his right ear by Lance Berkman's line drive in the first inning of Saturday's game in Houston and was carted off the field.

He was examined by Astros team doctor David Lintner and sent to Methodist Hospital for further tests. The Pirates said Jakubauskas, a former Mariner, would be kept at the hospital overnight for observation. The team was awaiting X-ray results.

The 31-year-old Jakubauskas was called up from the minors Friday and was making his first start of the season.

Berkman drove a 1-0 pitch back to the mound and it hit Jakubauskas in the head. Jakubauskas fell and the ball bounced all the way back to catcher Jason Jaramillo.

Notes

• Dodgers right-hander Vicente Padilla has been put on the 15-day disabled list because his upper right forearm muscle is bothering him. The move was announced after a 4-3 victory in 13 innings at Washington. Manager Joe Torre did not say who will take Padilla's spot in the rotation Tuesday against the Mets. Also, Torre says he sent Manny Ramirez home to Los Angeles to get treatment on his strained right calf, avoiding the "circus" when the team heads to New York to face the Mets.

• With Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury on the 15-day disabled list, the Red Sox reacquired Jonathan Van Every from Pittsburgh for a player to be named.

• Cleveland closer Kerry Wood wasn't happy after pitching a one-inning simulated game but the Indians are waiting to see how he responds before deciding on the next step in his rehab.

• Astros ace Roy Oswalt returned to Mississippi after a tornado damaged his parents' home. Oswalt grew up in Weir, Miss. Houston general manager Ed Wade said he expects Oswalt to rejoin the team by Tuesday.
