Alex Rodriguez hits home run No. 584, eighth all-time | Baseball notebook

The Yankees third baseman drilled a pitch over the right-center-field fence in the fourth inning of Saturday's 7-3 win over the Rangers — his first home run of the season and the 584th of his career — to pass Mark McGwire for sole possession of eighth place on the all-time home-run list.

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez had joked just hours before that he may never knock one out of the park this season. Silly as it sounds, perhaps 41 straight at-bats without a home run can shake the faith of even the best of long-ball hitters.

But thanks to one slip-up by Texas pitcher Doug Mathis, Rodriguez no longer has to entertain such thoughts.

The Yankees third baseman drilled a pitch over the right-center-field fence in the fourth inning of Saturday's 7-3 win over the Rangers — his first home run of the season and the 584th of his career — to pass Mark McGwire for sole possession of eighth place on the all-time home-run list.

"It was exciting to get one over the fence," said Rodriguez, the former Mariner who told reporters he was unaware that he had passed McGwire until five minutes before he addressed them.

When asked if he really thought he'd never hit a home run this season, he said: "It felt like it. It seemed like everyone had one and they were all ragging on me that I hadn't checked in yet."

Notes

• The New York Mets' 2-1, 20-inning victory over St. Louis lasted 6 hours, 53 minutes, the longest game in the majors since Colorado beat San Diego 2-1 in 22 innings on April 17, 2008. The Cardinals left the bases loaded in the 10th, 12th and 14th and stranded 22 runners.

• RHP Freddy Garcia, who has struggled in two outings, will have his next start skipped in the Chicago White Sox's rotation. He is scheduled next to start against the Mariners on April 24.

• San Francisco CF Aaron Rowand will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with two small fractures in his left cheek and a mild concussion after he was hit with a fastball Friday by Dodgers RHP Vicente Padilla.

• Chicago Cubs starter Tom Gorzelanny expects to make his next start after leaving Saturday's loss to Houston after being hit in the left arm by a line drive.
