Baseball | Toronto Blue Jays acquire shortstop Alex Gonzalez

The Toronto Blue Jays signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million, with a team option to sign him for $2.5 million for the 2011 season.

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million, with a team option to sign him for $2.5 million for the 2011 season.

Thursday's move came a day after backup shortstop John McDonald agreed to a $3 million, two-year deal that effectively marked the end of free agent Marco Scutaro's time with the team.

Gonzalez, 32, split last season between Cincinnati and Boston, batting .238 with eight home runs and 41 runs batted in.

Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos continues to seek a "long-term solution" at shortstop, according to MLB.com; there is speculation the Blue Jays will seek top shortstop prospects in any trade involving superstar pitcher Roy Halladay.

Notes

• Anthopoulos told MLB.com he has informed 21-year-old outfielder Travis Snider — a graduate of Jackson High School in Mill Creek — he is not guaranteed a spot on the opening-day roster. Snider hit .241 with nine homers and 29 RBI in 241 at-bats last season.

"I told him he needed to make the team," Anthopoulos said. "There's certainly no assurances that he's going to be an everyday player for us. His spring training is going to dictate a lot of that, so we do want to be prepared."

Bob Sheppard said he has no intention of returning to his job as public-address announcer for the New York Yankees.

Sheppard, 99, hasn't worked a game since late in the 2007 season because of illness.

"I have no plans of coming back," Sheppard told MLB.com. "Time has passed me by, I think."

• Ex-slugger Sammy Sosa is being sued for $203,000 by a Dominican Republic businessman who claims Sosa owes him for commission on a house sale, among other things. Sosa is to appear in court Wednesday.
