Mariners' Ken Griffey Jr. could earn $3.9 million next season
Base salary is $2.35 million, but total could jump to $3.9 million if Griffey hits incentives in one-year contract.
Seattle Times staff reporter
Ken Griffey Jr. has a chance to earn $3.9 million in 2010 if he hits all his incentives, according to contract information obtained by The Associated Press.
Griffey, who reached agreement with the Mariners on Feb. 19 to return for one more season, made $3.15 million last year. His maximum earnings in 2009, if he had hit all his incentives, was $5 million.
According to the AP figures, Griffey will receive a $2.35 base salary in 2010. His base in 2009 was $2 million.
Griffey will earn $3.9 million if he again has at least 400 plate appearances, Seattle has an increased home attendance of at least 2.5 million fans and Griffey again does not go on the disabled list while remaining on the roster for the entire season, AP reported.
Last year, Griffey earned $1.15 million of a potential $3 million in bonuses based on playing time and attendance.
Griffey's contract still requires that he take his physical examination before it becomes guaranteed. The two sides decided it wasn't prudent to do the exam immediately, because Griffey still is healing from recent knee surgery. Griffey is expected to take his physical in January, and Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said earlier he expects no issues.
Mariners add 3 scouts
The Mariners announced the hiring of three pro scouts — John Stearns and Todd Greene, both former major-league catchers, and Bill Masse.
The three will report to Carmen Fusco, the M's director of pro scouting.
