Mariners' Ken Griffey Jr. has knee surgery to remove bone spur
Seattle DH battled knee pain during 2009 season
Seattle Times staff reporter
Mariners designated hitter Ken Griffey Jr. had a bone spur removed from his left knee during arthroscopic surgery Monday in his native Cincinnati. The surgery was performed by Dr. Tomothy Kremchek and Griffey was released as an outpatient.
Griffey, 39, a pending free agent, has yet to announce whether he plans to retire from baseball or return for another season in 2010. He endured numerous bouts of pain in his knee during a 2009 season that saw him hit .214 with 19 home runs, 57 runs batted in and post an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .735.
Normal recovery time for this type of surgery is four to six weeks, according to the Mariners.
In one stretch from Aug. 20 through Sept. 8, Griffey was the starting DH in only four games because of knee problems. Griffey had already had his knee drained of fluid in June, right after hitting a tying, eighth-inning, pinch-hit home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
