Baseball notes: Arizona's Mark Reynolds breaks strikeout record

The Diamondbacks slugger struck out for the 204th, 205th and 206th times this season, breaking his major-league record

PHOENIX — Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds broke his major-league strikeout record Tuesday night, fanning for the 204th, 205th and 206th times this season in the Diamondbacks' game against San Francisco.

Reynolds' second strikeout broke the record of 204 he established last season. After driving in a run — his career-high 100th run batted in — with a first-inning double, he struck out in his next three at-bats.

Oakland's Jack Cust set the American League record with 197 last season.

Schilling won't run for Senate

NEW YORK — Curt Schilling won't test out how popular he is in Massachusetts.

The 42-year-old former Boston pitcher, beloved in the state for his starring role in ending an 86-year Red Sox championship drought, announced he won't run for Edward M. Kennedy's seat in the U.S. Senate.

Schilling had expressed interest in pursuing the post held for almost 50 years by the Massachusetts Democrat before he died in August.

Lasorda portrait unveiled

WASHINGTON, D.C. — George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Tommy Lasorda under the same roof?

A portrait of the former manager — naturally, with lots of Dodger blue — was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery on Lasorda's 82nd birthday.

"I just can't believe something like this is happening to me," Lasorda said.

It was the latest honor for Lasorda, who was voted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1997 and had an asteroid named after him in 2003 — Asteroid Lasorda.
