The Mariners on Thursday called up infielder Chris Shelton and sent left-hander Jason Vargas down to Class AAA Tacoma in his place.
"With the All-Star break beginning Monday, we will not need a fifth starter until July 25," general manager Jack Zduriencik said in a release. "Optioning Jason to Tacoma and getting Shelton up here allows us to keep Vargas pitching on schedule and add a bat to our ballclub."
Shelton got off to a slow start offensively at AAA, but then his bat picked up where it left off in spring training.
"I got sent down and was frustrated with that," he said. "And then, a couple of days into it, I was able to move on."
The third-base role has been a challenge for the natural first baseman. Shelton admitted he's had good days and bad and is simply looking to stay consistent.
He also admitted he was disappointed when he didn't get called up right away once Adrian Beltre was injured.
"I'd be lying if I said no," he said. "But if they wanted to call me up, they would, and here I am."
Note
• Yuniesky Betancourt (hamstring) was supposed to play seven innings at second base for Tacoma on Thursday, and possibly be activated this weekend. But he was pulled from the lineup because of an "organizational decision." Zduriencik would not comment on the lineup change.
