NL | Manny Ramirez homers in second game back for Dodgers

Manny Ramirez hit his 534th career home run, then dodged reporters' questions after the Dodgers' loss to San Diego.

SAN DIEGO — Manny Ramirez needed only five plate appearances before hitting his first post-drug suspension home run.

It wasn't enough for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 7-4 loss to San Diego on Saturday.

Ramirez homered in his second game back from his 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy. It was his 534th career homer, tying Jimmie Foxx for 16th place.

Ramirez left the game after six innings and dodged reporters afterward.

"I think this is his comfort zone, in that batter's box, in the ballpark, in the clubhouse, something that he hasn't had for a couple of months," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.

Pitchers make debut

BRADENTON, Fla. — Pittsburgh Pirates farmhands Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel became the first players from India to appear in organized baseball when each pitched an inning for Bradenton in a Gulf Coast League game.

Singh allowed two hits, one run and struck out one. Patel tossed a scoreless eighth, throwing seven of nine pitches for strikes.

The former cricket players, both 20, signed last fall after appearing on a TV reality show called "Million Dollar Arm," designed to find athletes who could throw more than 90 mph. Singh won the $100,000 first prize and Patel was runner-up.

Notes

Adam Dunn, 29, became the fifth player major-league history to reach 300 home runs in fewer than 4,200 at-bats when he homered for Washington. He joined Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire, Ralph Kiner and Harmon Killebrew.

• San Diego C Henry Blanco will go on the disabled list after leaving Saturday's game with a strained hamstring.

• St. Louis rookie Blake Hawksworth, a former Eastlake High School pitcher, tossed 2-1/3 scoreless innings of relief and hasn't allowed an earned run in his past eight innings and six appearances.
