Mariners' Adrian Beltre having surgery

Beltre had the same operation last Sept. 18, performed by Dr. Edward Khalfayan, the Mariners' medical director. This surgery will be performed on Tuesday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, the Angels' team orthopedist. It's uncommon, but not unheard of, for bone spurs to return after being removed.

LOS ANGELES — Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre played Saturday night, but is headed for the operating table. He will have surgery on his left shoulder to remove bone spurs.

General manager Jack Zduriencik initially mentioned that Beltre could be back in four to six weeks, but the Mariners' medical staff has clarified that estimate. A more realistic best-case scenario for Beltre's absence is six to eight weeks, according to the medical staff. That would make his earliest return the middle of August if the surgery is conducted promptly.

That means that Beltre, a free agent at the end of the season, won't be traded — at least not by the July 31 non-waiver deadline. After going 1 for 5 Saturday night, he's batting .259 with five home runs and 30 runs batted in.

The immediate question is who will play third base for the Mariners. Zduriencik mentioned infielder Chris Woodward and second baseman Jose Lopez as options, but he was somewhat blindsided by the news and hadn't had time to confer with manager Don Wakamatsu.

Russell Branyan could be an option, but he's not considered a strong defensive third baseman. Mike Morse has been playing some third base for Class AAA Tacoma and hitting well (.312, 10 home runs, 52 runs batted in 260 at-bats).
