MLB Notebook | Randy Johnson to make first bid for 300th

WASHINGTON — San Francisco shortstop Edgar Renteria acknowledged he'll be a little more edgy than usual when Randy Johnson starts against the Washington Nationals today.

Johnson could become the 24th pitcher in major-league history to reach 300 career wins, and his teammates hope to be a part of history.

"You're going to be in the [record] book, too, because everybody's going to say, 'Randy won 300, but I played in that game,' " Renteria said.

Johnson, 45, will get his first chance at the magic number in his 597th career start. He made his debut with the Washington franchise, which was the Montreal Expos when Johnson made his debut with them in 1988.

Johnson could become the second-oldest pitcher to reach 300 wins. Phil Niekro accomplished the feat at 46 in 1985.

Stadium doomed

DETROIT — What remains of historic Tiger Stadium will be demolished after the city rejected a $33.4 million proposal by a nonprofit group to preserve and renovate the old ballpark.

The ballpark, which opened in 1912, was partially demolished in 2008. But the Detroit City Council voted last October to spare the remaining wedge of ballpark.

Yankees' streak ends

NEW YORK — The Yankees' major-league-record errorless streak ended at 18 games when catcher Jorge Posada threw the ball into center field against Texas on a steal of second base.

It was the first error for New York since May 13.

Notes

• With the worst ERA in the major leagues, the Nationals fired pitching coach Randy St. Claire and promoted Steve McCatty from AAA Syracuse to replace him.

• Milwaukee reliever David Riske of Renton is scheduled to have elbow surgery and could miss the rest of the season.

• Cincinnati pitcher Edinson Volquez went back on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right elbow, a day after his first start coming off the DL.

• Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano found himself in hot water again when he skipped a team flight to Atlanta without permission. Manager Lou Piniella and club officials had no comment.

• Texas OF Josh Hamilton went on the DL with an abdominal strain that could sideline him from two weeks to two months.

• Philadelphia OF Raul Ibanez hit his 200th career home run against the Padres.

• Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria leads AL players in fan voting for All-Star spots, more than doubling the total of perennial starter Alex Rodriguez.
