Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima has three fractures in his toe and will be out of action for six to eight weeks, quite a bit longer than the two weeks manager Don Wakamatsu guessed on Monday.

The question Tuesday was who replaces him on the roster.

Veteran Jamie Burke? No, it's Guillermo Quiroz, a 27-year-old journeyman minor-league catcher who was playing at Class AA.

Wakamatsu had a phone conversation with Burke and told him the team is looking to go in a younger direction for now.

If Rob Johnson doesn't hit, Quiroz could get some everyday playing time. That's one reason Burke was left in Class AAA. The team isn't confident he could handle a daily role if Johnson falters.

"I've seen him enough to kind of know what to expect of his playing ability," Wakamatsu said of Quiroz. Primarily, he remembers Quiroz for "his ability to handle a pitching staff. I think he adds an ability to throw."

Johjima was accidentally spiked in his left foot during a play at the plate Monday.

Notes

• The team doesn't feel catching prospect Adam Moore is ready to make the jump from AAA yet, having played only a handful of games at that level.

• Statistically, the Mariners are the seventh-best defensive team in baseball and fourth best in the AL with a UZR of 10.4. Offense is what is hurting this squad.

Adrian Beltre's on-base-plus slugging percentage (OPS) was .563 entering Tuesday's game, Jose Lopez's .579, Yuniesky Betancourt's .641, Wladimir Balentien's .652, Franklin Gutierrez's .697.

The average OPS in the AL this year is .766. The major league average is .755.

Only three Mariners starters are posting an OPS of .700 or better, worst in the league.
