An MRI done on Carlos Silva on Tuesday revealed an impingement in his right shoulder. The MRI also showed fraying of both the labrum and rotator cuff.

The results were reviewed by team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan and have been forwarded to Dr. David Altcheck for a second opinion.

Silva is under contract for two years after this one, but the news does not sound good. Still, such fraying can be normal in a pitcher's arm and a guy can work through it without surgery.

Playing for a cause

Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready played the national anthem to benefit the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. McCready, 43, has had Crohn's since he was 21.

McCready took a few cuts in the batting cage.

"I hit a few of them out," he said, pointing just beyond the infield dirt.

What, you thought he meant the ballpark?

He has played the anthem before, but never at a ballgame.

"So yeah, I'm a little bit nervous," he admitted before the game. "More like, excited. We practiced it a bit just before and it sounded great, so I can't wait to play it."

McCready has also taken BP before with the other band members. He said bass guitarist Jeff Ament and lead vocalist Eddie Vedder are better hitters than him.

• Infielder Brad Nelson, drafted by Milwaukee in the fourth round in 2001, was acquired by Seattle. The Mariners' general manager is Jack Zduriencik, a former Brewers executive. Nelson was outrighted to Class AAA by Milwaukee last Thursday, but he refused the assignment and opted to become a free agent.

Yuniesky Betancourt sat out Tuesday after making errors in his two previous games.

"It's not that I'm sending a message," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "It's more the level of play and the expectation."
