ST. LOUIS — Milwaukee second baseman Rickie Weeks will miss the rest of the season because of a tear in his left wrist, a severe setback for the NL Central leaders.
Weeks, who had a similar injury to his right wrist in 2006, hurt himself while striking out Sunday in St. Louis. An MRI exam Monday in Arizona revealed the extent of the damage. He'll have surgery this week, with a recovery time of four to six months.
"He was having a tremendous year, a great start," manager Ken Macha said. "But nobody's going to feel sorry for you."
The oft-injured Weeks was hitting .272 with nine home runs and 24 runs batted in.
Notes
• New York Mets slugger Carlos Delgado has a bone spur and torn labrum in his right hip that will require surgery, and there's no immediate word on when he might return to the lineup. Delgado was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.
• CF Rick Ankiel (bruised shoulder) and RHP Chris Carpenter (rib cage) both may rejoin St. Louis on Wednesday.
• Atlanta LHP Tom Glavine (shoulder) threw three simulated innings, another step in the 300-game winner's plans for a rehab assignment this week.
• Minnesota OF Delmon Young, who left the team Friday to attend to his ill mother, won't return until Friday at the earliest.
• The Diamondbacks-Marlins game in Miami was postponed by rain. It will made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
• Colorado manager Clint Hurdle called the press box after the Rockies' 5-1 victory over Atlanta on Monday to request a meeting with official scorer Jack Wilkinson after Todd Helton's hard grounder between second and third in the ninth inning was charged as an error to SS Yunel Escobar. Helton finished 0 for 4 and needs one hit to become the 255th player to reach 2,000 career hits.
"I do this for players all the time when I think it's inappropriate," Hurdle said. "I have to take the initiative for my players."
