Vladimir Guerrero wasn't able to throw. Now he can't hit, either, and the Los Angeles Angels must play without their top slugger for at least a month.
Guerrero has a torn muscle in his chest and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday. An examination in Los Angeles by noted team orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum revealed the pectoral tear.
Manager Mike Scioscia said he expects Guerrero to heal without surgery.
Guerrero had played only as the designated hitter this year. Before he left the team Thursday in Seattle, Guerrero said the injury affected him only in the field. However, he had only one extra-base hit — a home run — in 32 at-bats. He was hitting .250 with three runs batted in.
Maicer Izturis was the DH on Friday, batting third.
Kansas City: 3B Alex Gordon is expected to be sidelined at least two months after surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. ... Minor leaguers Juan Rivera and Joseph Billick were suspended for 50 games after testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.
Los Angeles: Nearly 1,800 attended a funeral service in Williamsport, Md., for pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, who died in an auto accident last week.
Minnesota: OF Jason Kubel became the third player to hit for the cycle already this season, after Dodgers 2B Orlando Hudson and Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler.
New York: OF Hideki Matsui's surgically repaired left knee has filled with fluid. He will be limited to pinch-hitting for a few days.
Toronto: C Michael Barrett was taken to a hospital for X-rays after landing awkwardly on his right shoulder in the game against Oakland.
