The Mariners have agreed to terms with No. 1 draft pick Josh Fields, a University of Georgia relief pitcher who took a physical here Saturday and will be invited to the team's major-league camp.
"I'm raring to go!" Fields said, before being advised not to comment further until the results of his physical are in and a contract signed.
The team is expected to announce the deal Sunday.
Fields, 23, was the closer for a Georgia team that reached the finals of the 2008 NCAA College World Series. Fields was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the year.
MLB.com reported Saturday that the deal was delayed because of a $500,000 gap between the $2 million contract he sought and the $1.5 million the Mariners were offering.
The right-hander, who is 6 feet, 178 pounds, limited opponents to a .112 batting average in 30 relief appearances in 2008.
Fields, who hasn't pitched since being drafted last June, was selected 20th overall.
