CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs and switch-hitting Milton Bradley reached a preliminary agreement Monday on a $30 million, three-year contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.
The deal is subject to a physical scheduled for Thursday, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized.
Adding Bradley was a high priority for the Cubs, who got swept from the playoffs after a lineup loaded with right-handed hitters struggled against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bradley, 30, batted .321 with 22 homers for the Texas Rangers last year and led the American League with a .436 on-base percentage. He made the All-Star team while serving primarily as a designated hitter. In Chicago, he is expected to be used mostly in right field.
According to the Chicago Tribune, a trade of Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis might be announced as soon as today. Marquis reportedly would be dealt to the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Luis Vizcaino.
Burrell to join Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Pat Burrell is going from one World Series team to the other. The Tampa Bay Rays added a big bat to the middle of their lineup, agreeing on a $16 million, two-year contract with Burrell.
Burrell, 32, spent the past nine seasons with Philadelphia, which defeated the Rays in last year's World Series. He hit .250 with 33 homers and drove in 86 runs last year.
Twins owner dies
MINNEAPOLIS — Carl Pohlad, a billionaire banker whose Minnesota Twins won two World Series titles, died at his home in Edina, Minn. He was 93.
When Pohlad acquired the Twins from Calvin Griffith for $38 million in 1984, he was credited for saving baseball in Minnesota. The Twins won the Series in 1987 and 1991.
Pohlad played football at Gonzaga.
