Seattle Times staff reporter

Seven candidates — none of whom has managed in the major leagues — will interview for the Mariners' vacant managerial job.

The club took the unusual step on Monday of releasing the candidates, the first of whom will be Brad Mills, bench coach of the Boston Red Sox. He is in Seattle today for his interview.

The other candidates will be White Sox bench coach Joey Cora, Diamondbacks third-base coach Chip Hale, Red Sox third-base coach DeMarlo Hale, Cardinals third-base coach Jose Oquendo, A's bench coach Don Wakamatsu, and Padres' Class AAA manager Randy Ready.

Names may be added as the process continues, the Mariners said.

"I have done a lot of work and made a ton of phone calls talking to people all around the game as we look for the right guy to manage our club next year," Zduriencik said. "I am looking forward to sitting down with each candidate and getting his thoughts on how he can help us with our goal of building this franchise into a World Series winner."

Notably absent from the list are Bobby Valentine, manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan, and Willie Randolph, former Mets manager, both of whom had rumored to be drawing the Mariners' interest.
