With spring will come the hopes of better things and I would suggest a wait-and-see attitude. Let's give the guy a chance and see what he does, as opposed to what we think he'll do.

Experience means something and so does judgment and of course, a little bit of fire-in-the-belly. Let's hope the Z-man has all three of these. If he is going to soothe the Mariners fans, he needs the first two. To effectively deal with unnecessary meddling from the front office, he's going to need the last one.

— Cookiecrumble, Talent, Ore.

Zduriencik was not my first choice (I liked DiPoto and Ng) but he certainly has good credentials, so I am optimistic for the future. Not the "big" change in direction or philosophy that some wanted, but still an improvement.

— Big Ebu, Federal Way

Now we have to wait and see what the Z-Man can bring to the table. I'm not going to make any condemnations yet. He was obviously respected at the Brewers and will bring experience and player evaluation to the table. Something that Mariners obviously lacked during the Bavasi era. It can only be a move in the right direction.

— Chopper58, Canberra, Australia

As a Brewers fan, I can say Seattle is getting one of the best drafters in the game — Fielder, Braun, Hardy, Hart, Gallardo. I hate to lose him, he had as much to do with Milwaukee's success as the GM and manager.

— MiBrewerFan, Washington, D.C.

This SABR fan is withholding all teeth-gnashing until we see what the Z-man does. He might very well believe that newer statistical information combined with good scouting is a smart way to run a franchise and to ignore it is to risk falling further behind the Epsteins and Friedmans of the world. And maybe we'll start teaching our young kids to take a pitch now and again.

— Mike8, Seattle

Hmmmmm. Not the most earthshaking pick. I was looking forward to some fresh ideas from a young GM. Oh well, if this guy was really responsible for selecting all those players named in the article, then he's a good talent evaluator, which is what we need most.

— Magnificentbutcher, Seattle

As I continued my quest for validating opinions for each candidate, I found more and more to like about Jack. He was by far the best candidate with regard to talent evaluation and a stellar verifiable record of player development skills ... the two core issues we had to get better at if we are to turn this "Titanic" around.
