Jim Thome stretched the truth Sunday after tying Mickey Mantle for 14th place on the all-time home-run list.
"I'm speechless," Thome said after hitting a two-run homer that helped vault the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox.
Thome's 536th homer tied him with Mantle, the former Yankees switch-hitter who, along with the Red Sox's Ted Williams (521 homers), were favorite players of Thome's father, Chuck.
"We talk about it all the time, the history of the game, and what those guys have done," Thome said three days after he and his father visited the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. "To be a part of that is just really hard to talk about. Because when you throw Mickey Mantle's name around, that's probably one of the greatest home-run hitters of all time, for sure."
Baltimore: Orioles OF Adam Jones (foot), a former Mariner, is set to return from the disabled list and play today.
Boston: Dustin Pedroia tied Del Pratt's season record of 183 hits for Red Sox a second basemen, set in 1922.
Chicago: Nick Swisher went 0 for 10 in this weekend's Boston series with five strikeouts.
Cleveland: The Indians traded minor-league infielder Jorge Velandia to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash.
Detroit: The Tigers are expected to recall LHP Dontrelle Willis from Class AAA Toledo this week. After an early-season wild streak, Willis was sent to Class A Lakeland to work on his control. ... RHP Freddy Garcia, a former Mariner, signed to a minor-league contract recently with Detroit and is scheduled to join the Tigers on Tuesday but will not be added to the active roster at that time. Garcia was also at Toledo, where he made one appearance and didn't allow a run in three innings.
New York: Alex Rodriguez hit his 547th home run leading off the fourth, moving within one of Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt for 12th place on the career list. ... RHP Joba Chamberlain (rotator cuff tendinitis) will travel with the Yankees on their road trip and probably will be activated Tuesday from the DL, manager Joe Girardi said. ... New York plans to call up C Chad Moeller and LHP Phil Coke from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when rosters expand Monday.
Oakland: Oakland has gone 37 consecutive games without scoring more than six runs, the longest streak by an AL team since 1988 when Milwaukee had a string of 40 straight games. ... The A's hope RHP Justin Duchscherer, out with a strained hip, will be available to start when Oakland plays a doubleheader in Baltimore Saturday.
Tampa Bay: B.J. Upton picked up his 40th stolen base of the season Sunday. He joins Carl Crawford — who has done it five times — as the only Tampa Bay players to have 40 steals in a season. ... C Dioner Navarro (hamstrings) was out of the lineup for the fourth time in the last five games. ... Closer Troy Percival (knee) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.
