M's option Brandon Morrow to Tacoma

Mariners relief pitcher Brandon Morrow was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma today in order to prepare him to take on a starting role for the big league club.

Seattle Times staff reporter

Mariners relief pitcher Brandon Morrow was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma this afternoon in order to prepare him to take on a starting role for the big league club.

Seattle recalled minor league reliever Jared Wells to take Morrow's roster spot. Morrow was a starting pitcher in college when the Mariners made him their top pick in the 2006 entry draft. The debate has raged ever since about when Morrow will actually get to take on a starting role as a professional

Morrow's entire pro career to date has been spent in the Mariners' bullpen. But with the last-place team now looking ahead to 2009, the plan is to get Morrow some starts in AAA and then at the big-league level come September.

"We have long viewed Brandon as a starter," interim general manager Lee Pelekoudas said. "He pitched his way onto the team in 2007, giving us an opportunity to acclimate him to the majors in a relief role and, at the start of this season, we thought his greatest value to the team in 2008 was in the bullpen."

"However, as our season progressed and it became obvious we were not going to reach the goals we had entering this year, we began internal discussions on the best time to convert Brandon back to a starting role. We believe that giving him time to stretch out in Tacoma and then, hopefully, make some starts for the big league club before spending the 2008 offseason preparing to come to camp as a starting pitcher for 2009 is the best route for his development."
