AL Wire Notes | Angels' wings keep Dodgers flailing again

The Los Angeles Dodgers were better off when they weren't getting any hits.

Saturday night, they were hitless against Jered Weaver and reliever Jose Arredondo of the Angels, but won 1-0.

Sunday, the Dodgers managed three hits in 8-2/3 innings against John Lackey, but lost 1-0. Francisco Rodriguez slammed the door by getting James Loney on a weak grounder with the bases loaded.

"I definitely would have liked to finish it," said Lackey (6-1), who threw 120 pitches. "I was definitely disappointed in that, but we got it done. We got a win."

Lackey, whose 2008 debut was delayed six weeks by a strained triceps, allowed only five runners. He struck out nine, walked two and retired 14 in a row in one stretch.

"Lackey's pretty good," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "We're not doing anything offensively, but I think this was more about him than about us. He's like a surgeon out there."

Because the Dodgers used an unearned run to beat the Angels on Saturday, their stretch of innings without scoring an earned run has grown to 18.

Baltimore: George Sherrill, who hadn't pitched in five days, blew his fourth save in 30 chances.

Boston: RHP Josh Beckett went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Houston, leaving Red Sox pitchers 0 for 25 with 18 strikeouts in interleague at-bats.

Chicago: The crowd of 39,573 was the third straight sellout against the Cubs, and sixth of the season for the White Sox. There were several fights in the stands.

Cleveland: OF Franklin Gutierrez, in a 2-for-30 slide, didn't play against Cincinnati.

Detroit: OF Magglio Ordonez went on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled muscle in his right side. The defending AL batting champion is hitting .307 with 12 home runs and 50 runs batted in.

Kansas City: OF David DeJesus left the Sunday's game with bruised ribs after a collision at the plate. His 13-game hitting streak remains intact because he walked in his only plate appearance.

Los Angeles: The Angels had won six consecutive road series before losing two of three at Dodger Stadium.

Minnesota: OF Michael Cuddyer was placed on the 15-day DL for the second time this season to let a lingering finger injury heal. Cuddyer, after signing a three-year, $24 million contract last winter, is hitting .252 with three homers in 234 at-bats.

New York: OF Bobby Abreu, 0 for 10 lifetime against Mets LHP Oliver Perez, got the day off.

Oakland: 2B Mark Ellis is batting an AL-worst .193 at home this season.

Tampa Bay: 3B Evan Longoria failed to drive in a run for the first time during his seven-game hitting streak. He's hitting .424 (14 for 33) during the streak.

Texas: Minor-league RHP Dustin Nippert threw a seven-inning no-hitter for AAA Oklahoma in a 1-0 win over Omaha.

Toronto: OF Alex Rios is batting .387 (24 for 62) with nine doubles in his past 17 games.
