NEW YORK — Felix Hernandez came out of the Mariners' game against the Mets in the fifth inning with a sprained left ankle.
Hernandez was injured when Carlos Beltran slid into him at the plate. Hernandez was covering the plate after a wild pitch. The Mariners led 5-1 at the time, on the strength of a grand slam by Hernandez in the second inning.
Hernandez allowed just two hits. He left the game one out shy of qualifying for a win.
Hernandez writhed in pain after the play at the plate. He tried one warmup pitch to see if he could continue, but buckled in pain. He pleaded for one more try, but the Mariners would have none of it, and he was helped off the field.
