Fired M's manager John McLaren thinks infighting doomed team

Fired Mariners manager John McLaren says "tension and jealousy" among players in the fractured clubhouse contributed to Seattle going from expecting the playoffs to the worst team in the major leagues in three months.

The Associated Press

Fired Mariners manager John McLaren says "tension and jealousy" among players in the fractured clubhouse contributed to Seattle going from expecting the playoffs to the worst team in the major leagues in three months.

"A little divided, pitchers against hitters," McLaren said Friday morning from Arizona, one day after the Mariners replaced him with bench coach Jim Riggleman. McLaren, an assistant in the majors for 211/2 years, went 68-88 in less than 12 months as manager.

McLaren said he wasn't trying to deflect criticism from himself but offer advice to the players on how to improve.
