The Mariners traded infielder Greg Norton to the Atlanta Braves today in exchange for a player to be named later, or cash considerations.
Norton was designated for assignment April 30 when Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien were recalled to the major-league roster. Seattle had 10 days to trade, release or assign Norton outright to the minors.
Norton, 35, was signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent on Feb. 13, 2008. He hit .438 in 6 games with Seattle this year. Norton began this season with Tacoma where he was hitting .409 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in 7 games with the Rainiers. He's a career .253 hitter with 114 doubles, 82 HR and 300 RBI in 12 seasons with the White Sox (1996-2000), Colorado (2001-2003), Detroit (2004), Tampa Bay (2006-2007) and Seattle (2008).
