We asked readers to choose one Mariners player for whom they'd like to wear a campaign button. We made one for each player as part of our special preview section, "The Great Debate" (Seattle Times, March 30) — so that is what the best entry for each player will receive. We'll publish one button winner a day.
Today: Jose Lopez
Winner:
The campaign button of my choosing would have to be Jose Lopez. He is a great player in my mind. Whenever I go to a Mariners game, I love to see him play because of his defense, his dedication, and most of all, his aggression. He is only a career .261 hitter but he shows potential, year in and year out. He is also 24, so he has at least 10, 15 years to mature and be able to produce better stats. He has been an all-star, a rookie-of-the-year candidate and, in my mind, an MVP candidate. He is one of the most well-known players I know of since he burst onto the scene in 2004. He is my favorite player in the MLB right now and probably will be for a long time.
