PEORIA, Ariz. — Mariners manager John McLaren has named Erik Bedard as Seattle's opening day starter.
Bedard was obtained in a trade with Baltimore last week for outfielder Adam Jones, left-handed reliver George Sherrill and three minor league prospects.
The veteran left-hander was expected to compete with Felix Hernandez for the top spot in Seattle's rotation, but McLaren said he informed Bedard of his decision on Wednesday.
