The Mariners have signed left-handed relief pitcher Arthur Rhodes to a minor-league contract with an invite to Spring Training, general manager Bill Bavasi announced today.
Rhodes, 38, did not pitch last season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery on his left elbow. After signing with the Mariners as a minor league free agent on Jan. 25, 2007, the left-hander had a successful spring training allowing only two earned runs in eight appearances (2.57 ERA). He made the opening day roster, but never made an appearance and was placed on the disabled list and later underwent ligament replacement surgery on May 2, 2007.
He has a career record of 75-60 with 30 saves and a 4.31 ERA in parts of 16 major-league seasons with Baltimore (1991-99), Seattle (2000-03), Oakland (2004), Cleveland (2005) and Philadelphia (2006).
Rhodes made 276 appearances for the Mariners from 2000-03, notching a 26-15 record with a 3.07 ERA. He made a combined 12 appearances for Seattle in the 2001 and 2002 postseason. Rhodes has a career record of 14-8 with 6 saves and a 3.27 ERA in 147 appearances at Safeco Field.
