Mariners manager John McLaren's staff is starting to come together: Jim Riggleman has accepted the position of bench coach, and Larry Bowa has been offered the third-base coach job.
Riggleman, the former Cubs and Padres manager who had been the Cardinals' minor-league field manager, accepted the Mariners' job primarily to become a more visible managerial candidate.
"I felt after being out of the big leagues for a few years, I better not pass on this opportunity," said Riggleman, whom Seattle contacted last Saturday. "You sometimes feel if you're out of sight, you're out of mind."
Bowa is currently third-base coach for the Yankees. but Joe Torre's departure as manager could have a domino effect on the coaching staff.
Bowa, a former Phillies and Padres manager, was Seattle's third-base coach in 2000. The Mariners asked for and received the Yankees' permission to talk to Bowa, who said he has not decided what to do.
"I'm just weighing things out right now," Bowa said. "[Seattle is] a good organization, with good people running it. I haven't really put a deadline on it."
