NL Wire Notes | Garcia hurt in run-in with Giants cart

Phillies right-hander Freddy Garcia was injured Sunday when he ran into an equipment cart that had stopped along the warning track in San Francisco's ballpark.

The former Mariner bruised and scraped his left shin in the collision, raising question as to whether he will be able to make his scheduled start tonight in the opener of a three-game series at Arizona.

Garcia, who was running to try to catch a fly ball in center field, toppled onto the cart used by the grounds crew and was clearly in pain. He was quickly carted off the field on the vehicle.

"See how I feel tomorrow," Garcia said after his team's 8-5 win over the Giants.

Jorge Costa, the Giants' senior vice president of ballpark operations, said the club would look into its procedure in regards to the cart being on the field during batting practice.

"It's never been an issue. He yelled and couldn't stop," Costa said. "We're sorry it happened."

Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said the team might know more late Sunday but perhaps not until Monday.

"I'm not upset. I'm just kind of curious why it was out there during our batting practice," Gillick said in the clubhouse before the game. "He has a contusion on his leg. They have him iced down. There's no fracture of any kind. We'll all have to wait. This is the kind of thing that could get sore and stiffen up overnight, so we have to keep tabs on that."

Atlanta: Manager Bobby Cox's seventh-inning ejection was the 128th of his career and the third of the season.

Chicago: Manager Lou Piniella showed some of his temper before the game, when he was asked about the decision to send INF Ronny Cedeno to Class AAA Iowa and not OF Felix Pie to make room for RHP Angel Guzman. "It's my decision," a weary Piniella snapped. "I get too many of these questions about my outfield. I come to the ballpark and I make a lineup, and I make the one that I think can help me win a baseball game that day."

Florida: OF Cody Ross was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The Marlins recalled OF Eric Reed, who was optioned Friday to Albuquerque but hadn't left Miami yet.

Los Angeles: 3B Andy LaRoche was called up from AAA Las Vegas, and INF/OF Marlon Anderson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day DL.

St. Louis: Persistent knee pain landed OF Preston Wilson on the 15-day DL, and OF Ryan Ludwick was called up from AAA Memphis. The team thinks that Wilson will need probably three weeks of rest and rehab.

Washington: RHP John Patterson was placed on the DL because of elbow inflammation and he could miss at least a month, manager Manny Acta said. The Nationals also activated SS Cristian Guzman and OF Nook Logan and sent OF Michael Restovich to AAA Columbus.
