M's Notebook | Losses aside, M's getting healthier

Seattle Times staff reporters

The Mariners managed to lose two games Sunday, one home, one away, but received better and more important news on the injury front.

Adrian Beltre returned to third base after missing games to rest a sore left shoulder. Jose Guillen played right field, testing his arm for the first time during spring training after Tommy John surgery. And closer J.J. Putz played catch.

Beltre knocked in a run, and both he and Guillen tallied one hit in the Mariners' 12-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said both "looked good."

Hargrove said Guillen misplayed one ball in the outfield, but continued to swing the bat well. He said that Putz, battling tightness in his right elbow, will throw off a mound this week, building to a longer three-inning outing in a minor-league game. Hargrove also said that Beltre likely won't play again until Thursday, so as not to aggravate the injury.

"I'm not worried," Beltre said.

Ramirez rocking

Another day, another solid outing for a Mariners starter. This time, Horacio Ramirez took his turn, allowing only one hit in four innings. Ramirez hasn't allowed a run this spring, and the Mariners starters have allowed just three in the past 21 innings.

Eight of Ramirez's first nine outs were on ground balls as the Mariners built a 3-0 lead.

"I work fast, keep the ball down and when I'm going well, I get ground balls early in the count or outs early in the count," Ramirez said.

Ramirez added that he didn't feel fatigued and that his communication with catcher Kenji Johjima improved from their first outing this spring.

How 'bout that (ex)-Husky?

The buzz surrounding Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum was evident Sunday in Scottsdale, where he pitched three impressive innings in the Giants' 8-3 victory over the Mariners' split squad.

Working the sixth through eighth, Lincecum held the M's scoreless, limiting them to two hits (one in the infield) and fanning four.

Lincecum received standing ovations from the sellout crowd after each of his final two innings, and some veteran Giants players who had been removed — most notably, Dave Roberts and Randy Winn — came back out to watch him pitch.

"I didn't even really notice," Lincecum said. "I was kind of locked in and trying not to get too nervous."

Catcher Bengie Molina even said he tried to hide in the dugout from Giants manager Bruce Bochy so he could stay in the game to catch Lincecum, but Bochy removed him anyway, as pre-planned.

It was a nice rebound outing for Lincecum, who gave up three runs in the first inning of his first spring outing.

Campillo rebounds, Foppert struggles

For the Mariners, Jorge Campillo came back from a bad outing against the Royals (four hits and five runs in one inning) to pitch two perfect innings against the Giants. He struck out three.

"The key today was he was ahead of every hitter," said John McLaren, who managed the M's in Scottsdale.

Jesse Foppert, once the Giants' top pitching prospect before injuries stymied his career, didn't fare as well.

Foppert, acquired by Seattle in the Winn trade of 2005, faced six batters and didn't get any outs.

All six runs eventually scored, but Foppert, who walked the first three batters he faced, wasn't quite as ineffective as it appeared. One of the Giants' hits was a pop fly that Raul Ibanez lost in the sun, another what McLaren termed a "seeing-eye ground ball."

Notes

• LHP Cesar Jimenez will have surgery Friday on his throwing elbow.

• LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith rolled his left ankle. He's expected to miss from three to five days.

• LF Wladimir Balentien hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, but Hargrove was equally impressed when he grounded out to the right side to move a runner to third.
