MLB Wire Notes: Wood set to make first start

CHICAGO — Kerry Wood, coming back from arthroscopic shoulder surgery, most likely will make his first start of the season Thursday when the Chicago Cubs play the Washington Nationals.

Wood allowed a run on five hits and struck out three in five innings Friday in a rehab start for Class AAA Iowa.

"I had a couple outings where I had real good stuff," said Wood, who also threw five scoreless innings in a rehab start with Class A Peoria last Sunday. "[Friday] I didn't have my best stuff, but I was able to make good pitches and not make a lot of mistakes. I felt good this morning. It's a good sign."

Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year, has been plagued by injuries throughout his career. He went on the disabled list three times last season and was relegated to relief work before having surgery on his right shoulder on Aug. 31. He finished with a 3-4 record and 4.23 earned-run average in 21 games that included 10 starts.

Also Saturday, the Cubs called up right-handed pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu from Iowa and optioned right-hander Angel Guzman to Class AAA. Ryu — 1-3 with a 3.21 ERA in seven starts for Iowa — will likely be used in relief.

Notes

• The Milwaukee Brewers acquired LHP Brian Shouse from the Texas Rangers in exchange for INF Enrique Cruz and a player to be determined. Shouse, on the disabled list with a strained left calf, was 3-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 64 appearances for Texas last season. Cruz is hitting .261 in 24 minor-league games this year, with one home run and 10 RBI.

• The New York Yankees placed struggling RH reliever Tanyon Sturtze on the 15-day DL with soreness in the front of his pitching shoulder. Sturtze has a 7.59 ERA in 18 appearances this season.

• Florida placed RHP Sergio Mitre on the 15-day DL with an inflamed pitching shoulder.

• The New York Mets purchased the contract of RHP Jeremi Gonzalez before his start against Milwaukee and sent reliever Heath Bell to Class AAA Norfolk.

• The Nationals placed C Brian Schneider on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring and recalled 1B Robert Fick from Class AAA New Orleans.

• The Oakland Athletics put RH reliever Justin Duchscherer on the 15-day DL and recalled RHP Chad Gaudin from Class AAA Sacramento. Duchscherer hasn't pitched since May 6 against Tampa Bay because of tightness and soreness in his right elbow.

• The San Diego Padres placed RHP Woody Williams on the 15-day DL with a strained left calf and purchased RHP Jim Brower's contract from Class A Eugene.

• The Rangers-Red Sox game in Boston was postponed by rain. It will be rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader on one of the days during the Rangers' next trip to Boston on June 9-11.
