SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners acquired second-year pitcher Marcos Carvajal from the Colorado Rockies on Thursday to complete their trade of catcher Yorvit Torrealba.
The 21-year-old Carvajal was 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 21 walks in 39 relief appearances last season, the right hander's first in the major leagues. In 2004, Carvajal split his season between Single-A Columbus, where he was a closer, and Double-A Jacksonville. "We were impressed that a young kid could make the jump from high-A to competing at the big-league level in Colorado," Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said. "This was an opportunity for us to continue to build our inventory of young, major league-level pitching prospects." The 27-year-old Torrealba hit .234 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 76 games with San Francisco and Seattle last season. He became expendable last month, after the Mariners signed free-agent catcher Kenji Johjima out of Japan. To make room for Carvajal on its 40-man major-league roster, Seattle designated right-handed pitcher Jeff Harris for assignment. Also Thursday, the Mariners selected infielder Jason Bourgeois in the minor league Rule 5 draft. Bourgeois, 23, hit .252 in 119 games last season for Triple-A Richmond, the Atlanta Braves' top farm team. He will likely begin 2006 with Triple-A Tacoma. "Bourgeois is an athletic middle infielder who can play three infield positions," said Ken Compton, Seattle's director of pro scouting. Copyright © 2005 The Seattle Times Company Most read articles
