HOUSTON — Edgar Martinez is expected to be among the players honored tonight before Game 4 of the World Series as a member of the all-time Latino baseball team. A major-league source confirmed that Martinez was chosen in balloting by fans as the third baseman on the 12-member "Latino Legends" team, which will be introduced at Minute Maid Park by actor Edward James Olmos. Balloting was conducted from Aug. 29 through Oct. 10 at Chevrolet dealerships and online at MLB.com. The team will consist of eight position players, three starting pitchers and a reliever. There is no designated hitter, the position at which Martinez played predominantly in his latter years after injuries prevented him from playing third. In the balloting for third base, Martinez beat out current Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre, as well as Vinny Castilla, Edgardo Alfonzo and Bobby Bonilla. This would be the second consecutive trip to the World Series to accept an award for Martinez, who retired from the Mariners after the 2004 season. Last year, before Game 3 in St. Louis, he was given the Roberto Clemente Award for contributions on and off the field. Tuesday, John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves received the Clemente award.
